Meet Joe

Joe Walsh proudly serves as the Provincial Director for Heroes Mending on the Fly – New Brunswick, carrying forward the work of his predecessor, Charles.

Growing up in Labrador, fishing was a daily pastime that instilled in Joe a lifelong connection to the outdoors. He went on to serve 23 years in the Canadian Armed Forces in both the Army and Air Force, including deployments on United Nations peacekeeping missions and the Persian Gulf War with an air-to-air refueling squadron.

Those years of service gave Joe a deep understanding of the visible and invisible scars that many veterans carry. It is this lived experience that fuels his commitment to supporting fellow veterans and first responders through the healing power of fly fishing.

Joe believes strongly in the restorative benefits of nature, fellowship, and shared purpose. Through his role, he looks forward to expanding outreach across New Brunswick, working with volunteers and community partners to ensure Heroes Mending on the Fly continues to bring hope, healing, and connection to those who have served this beautiful country.

Meet Steve

Steve Wilson’s journey began at the age of 12, when he first cast a line into the Miramichi River, sparking a lifelong passion for fly fishing. At 20, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, joining the Infantry where he would serve for nearly two decades. Over the course of his military career, Steve deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq and conducted operations in various regions around the globe.

In 2012, Steve transitioned to the role of Imagery Technician, bringing a creative and technical dimension to his service. Throughout his 18 years in the Canadian Army, he developed a deep understanding of teamwork, resilience, and the importance of support networks—values that would later influence his involvement with Heroes Mending on the Fly, an organization dedicated to helping veterans through the therapeutic benefits of fly fishing.

Since joining Heroes Mending on the Fly in 2020, Steve has become a passionate advocate for fly fishing as a means of healing, particularly for those affected by PTSD. In 2025, he took on the role of Assistant Provincial Coordinator for Heroes Mending on the Fly in New Brunswick, furthering the organization’s mission to use fly fishing to build camaraderie, foster mental well-being, and create strong support networks within the veteran community.

Outside of his service, Steve is a dedicated husband and father to three children. His family calls Geary, New Brunswick home, where he continues to pursue his love for fly fishing and fly tying as therapeutic tools for healing and building connections.
