Veterans Ombudsman Commendation

In 2021, the Nova Scotia Heroes Mending On The Fly Program received a Veterans Ombudsman Commendation, an award given annually to individuals, groups, businesses or organizations that have made an exceptional contribution to the well-being of Veterans and their families.

Congratulations and thank you to Nova Scotia Provincial Director, Ray McEachern, and all volunteers for their endearing dedication towards supporting our participants’ healing.

Meet  Michael McKinnon

I grew up in Nova Scotia, where I developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors, especially fly fishing. In 1990, I joined the Canadian Armed Forces as an Infanteer with The Royal Canadian Regiment, serving proudly until my medical release in 2011 due to injury. Following my retirement, I returned home to Nova Scotia.
I have been fly fishing since childhood and have been commercially tying flies for more than 35 years. As a Professional Guide, I continue to spend as much time as possible fishing and hunting throughout the province.

In 2019, I was invited to teach fly tying for the Annapolis Valley Chapter of Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada (HMOTF). Over time, I took on additional administrative responsibilities, and in the summer of 2025, I was appointed Provincial Director for Nova Scotia.

Over the past seven years, our dedicated team has introduced more than 250 Veterans and First Responders to the Nova Scotia program, which now operates in five different locations across the province. The fulfillment and satisfaction our volunteers gain from witnessing the positive impact on participants’ lives is immeasurable.

I look forward to continuing to lead our program, expanding its reach, and strengthening its impact under my direction
